The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has given an assurance that he will promote and enhance responsible mining when he is elected president.

Campaigning in the Western Region on Saturday, he said the initiatives would include reforms in the licensing and monitoring regime to actively involve chiefs and the local communities, and the establishment of a Minerals Development Bank to provide financing for the capital intensive venture of mining.

Saturday’s campaign took him to Evalue Gwira Ajomoro, Prestea Huni Valley and Tarkwa Nsuaem constituencies.

Protection
During engagements with the chiefs and people, Dr Bawumia indicated that the rivers and other water bodies are precious and must not be destroyed. “A Bawumia Presidency will collaborate with the mining communities to protect our environment while promoting sustainable mining,” he stated.

Fresh ideas
Dr Bawumia appealed to Ghanaians to elect him as President. He said former President John Mahama represents the past while he (Bawumia) comes with fresh ideas.

Earlier on Thursday, Dr Bawumia campaigned in Wassa East, Shama and Mpohor constituencies, while on Friday, he was in Ahanta West, Ellembelle and Jomoro constituencies.
