Unfounded allegations against EC distasteful — Bagbin

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has cautioned Members of Parliament (MPs) against making unsubstantiated allegations against the Electoral Commission (EC) as elections approach.

He said such allegations can create problems for the country, which will not be in the interest of anybody.

Speaking at an emergency meeting of Parliament on Tuesday, September 3, Speaker Bagbin said it is important that MPs co-operate to ensure that the right things are done instead of throwing out unsubstantiated allegations.

Accusation
His call came after some Minority MPs including the leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson and the MP for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, accused the EC of attempts to manipulate the electoral process against the NDC ahead of the December polls.

Dr Forson called for a forensic audit of the voters register insisting that the irregularities in it are too many and therefore cannot be accepted. “Mr Speaker, I’m sorry to say that we cannot vouch for the integrity of the voter register as it stands at the moment. The details of these irregularities are so fertile and cannot be accepted. We, therefore, demand a forensic audit into the voter register database,” he said.

Suspicion
But, in his reaction, Mr Bagbin said, “Anything coming from you is coming from suspicion, so enough is enough. Let’s work together. You are the leaders. The people want to learn from you.”
