Ghana’s economy was in disarray but Akufo-Addo/Bawumia rescue nation – Napo

The running mate for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 Presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo has stated that the Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo government inherited crushing economy from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2016.

He noted that despite these difficulties, the current Akufo-Addo/Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia administration made impressive progress. They have achieved significant improvements in areas like inflation, debt restructuring, and fiscal management.

Napo emphasized that a strong economy is essential for a country’s growth. He pointed out that under former President Mahama, Ghana’s economy declined, leading to the cancellation of Nursing Trainee allowances and nearly three years of unpaid wages for teachers.

In an interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” Morning Show on October 16, 2024, the former Energy and Education Minister argued that economic success should benefit individuals, which was not the case during the NDC’s time in power.

He stated, “Ghana’s economy should serve all Ghanaians. Some countries have seen great economic growth, but their citizens lack the freedom to enjoy it. This often happens in communist nations or under dictatorial regimes, where women are denied education and work opportunities.”

“Economic growth must improve the lives of individuals and the environment. However, when Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo took office in January 2017, the economy was in disarray. The previous government misled the IMF with policies they were aware were flawed.”
