Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has urged Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to remain focused on the $1.7 billion loss linked to GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, cautioning him against distractions aimed at diverting public attention.

In a Facebook post on Monday, August 24, Mr Afenyo-Markin disclosed that the NPP Flagbearer, during a meeting at his Accra residence ahead of Parliament’s emergency sitting, expressed full confidence in his leadership of the Minority Caucus. Dr Bawumia specifically warned him not to be sidetracked by attempts to shift focus from the matter. “He called on the Minority, under my leadership, to do everything within the rules of the House to ensure the Mahama government is held fully accountable to the people of Ghana for this loss,” the Minority Leader quoted.

He added that the former Vice President commended the Caucus for its efforts so far.

Assurance
Mr Afenyo-Markin said he assured Dr Bawumia that pursuing the matter is a national duty, pledging to prosecute it “to the fullest extent of our ability, with the very best of intentions, and minded always by the interests of the Ghanaian people.”

He further informed the NPP flagbearer that the $1.7 billion loss—equivalent to 1.5% of GDP and confirmed by the IMF in its August 2026 report—remains firmly on the Minority’s agenda as Parliament reconvenes.
“We remain resolute in this commitment, and we will not relent until the Ghanaian people receive the answers they deserve,” he stated.

The Minority is expected to push for a parliamentary inquiry into the loss, detailed in the IMF Country Report No. 26/213, when the House sits later today.
