The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has launched Ghana’s first fleet of electric buses on Wednesday, November 27, marking progress in updating the country’s public transport system.

The buses will start test operations this week. This project is part of Dr. Bawumia’s plan to use electric vehicles to save costs in transportation.

During the launch, Albert Adu Boahen, Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MTTL), mentioned that steps have been taken to ensure the electric buses are used effectively.

The buses will operate on routes such as Oyibi-Accra, Accra-Amasaman, and Ashaiman-Accra. This initiative aims to cut public transport costs by 40%.

Adu Boahen also highlighted that charging stations will be set up at all MTTD locations in the capital.

“This will lead to a significant 40% reduction in operational costs, allowing us to reinvest in improving our services. Some of these savings will be passed on to the public through lower fares and better service.

“Moreover, electric buses offer a quieter and smoother ride, enhancing the passenger experience. The board and management recognize the changing preferences of passengers in the evolving transport market.

“We understand it is our responsibility to ensure the right systems, structures, and resources are in place for the successful management of these buses,” he said.
