Asantehene urges new Mehame Chief to strengthen ties with Manhyia

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has expressed his keen interest in the happenings of the Ahafo Region, which falls under his authority.

He emphasized that the creation of separate administrative regions does not diminish the identity of the people or their allegiance to their traditional leadership.

Speaking at the Manhyia Palace on Monday, March 11, during the swearing-in ceremony of the new chief of Mehame, Nana Owusu Konto II, the Asantehene asserted that Ahafo is part of the Asante Kingdom and therefore belongs to him. For that reason, no chief from Ahafo has the right to distance themselves from the Manhyia Palace.

He noted that the separation of Ahafo from the former Brong Ahafo region has prompted him to take an even closer interest in the area.

Get Closer
Otumfuo criticized the chiefs of Mehame for distancing themselves from Manhyia for some time. He pointed out that after the former chief swore allegiance to him, he never saw him again.

The Asantehene urged the new chief not to repeat that behavior, stating, “Recently, when Ahafo was separated from Brong Ahafo, I began thinking about the chiefs there. How can I think about you if you don’t come? You seem to be satisfied with the Divisional Council status.”

Mandate
The Asantehene emphasized that he was giving Nana Konto the mandate to be chief because his mother, the Queen, sanctioned it.

He urged the new chief to address whatever issues had caused the initial disapproval from her, stating, “Prove yourself worthy to your mother. Don’t confirm her fears.”
