Dr. Randy Abbey, the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), is facing public backlash for leading his management team on a courtesy visit to Gbese Mantse Nii Ayi Bonte II to discuss matters relating to cocoa.

The aim of the visit was to discuss plans to address current challenges, sustainably boost cocoa production, and unlock the full potential of Ghana’s cocoa industry.

Reactions
Critics on social media questioned why the CEO would seek advice from a chief whose area is not known for cocoa production and who lacks knowledge about the cocoa industry.

Many voiced their concerns, arguing that it is unacceptable for Dr. Abbey—a newcomer to cocoa matters, appointed by President Mahama just two months ago—not to have visited cocoa-growing areas to gather firsthand information from farmers. Instead, they criticized him for seeking guidance from individuals insufficiently informed about cocoa.

Reactions included comments such as, “What does cocoa have to do with a fishing community? Is this a type of corporate social responsibility?” Another individual wrote, “This is an unnecessary trip. Visit cocoa-growing areas like the Atiwa East and West enclaves to assure farmers of how you plan to help them boost cocoa bean production for the nation. The Fisheries Minister should be visiting the Ga chief instead.”

Another commentator asked, “When will you visit the paramount chiefs of cocoa-growing areas, especially in the Western Region, Western North, Eastern Region, and others? There is no cocoa production in Greater Accra.”

Commitment
In his speech, Dr. Abbey reaffirmed his commitment to addressing challenges within the cocoa sector while also supporting community development.

He emphasized his dedication to initiatives aimed at enhancing education and generating job opportunities for the people of Gbese. He assured Nii Ayi Bonte of his commitment to collaborate for sustainable development in the region.

Ties
The Gbese Mantse responded by reaffirming his dedication to leveraging strong ties with COCOBOD to promote growth in the cocoa sector. He pledged his unwavering support and commitment to ensuring the board’s success.
