First Lady and founder of the Lordina Foundation, Lordina Mahama, has urged persons living with chronic non-communicable diseases to take full advantage of the Mahama Cares health programme when it becomes operational.

Speaking on Saturday, June 7, during the third edition of a free health screening for over 145 retired Assemblies of God ministers and their spouses in Accra, she explained that Mahama Cares, officially known as the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, was designed to fill health service gaps not fully addressed by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

According to her, the initiative will provide consistent care, particularly for chronic conditions, with a strong focus on preventive health at the community level.

The quarterly screening, held at the Ringway Gospel Centre, forms part of a commitment the first lady made in September 2024 to support the health needs of members of the Assemblies of God Retired Ministers and Spouses Association.

Specialists, including urologists, gynaecologists, dietitians, and general practitioners, conducted various medical tests, including blood sugar checks, cancer screening, and prostate examinations and provided medications and lifestyle guidance based on the findings.

She emphasised that this third edition builds on the success of earlier screenings held in November 2024 and March 2025, and reaffirmed her foundation’s dedication to improving the lives of those who have selflessly served others.

She also encouraged attendees to strictly adhere to medical advice and prescriptions received during the screening, noting that long-term health requires sustained effort and attention.

Reverend Dr. Harry Insaidoo, President of the Retired Ministers and Spouses Association, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the initiative, describing it as “one of the most exciting and impactful interventions” for retired clergy.

He praised both Lordina Mahama and President John Mahama for their continued support, while also commending the medical team and church leadership for their cooperation in making the programme a success.

“To us, it was one of the biggest and the most exciting moments for us, as every three months, the doctors will thoroughly examine you, and thereafter, they will give you medication Not only that, they will also offer pieces of advice on how to live a good and healthy life,” he stated.
