The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has inaugurated a 17-member ministerial committee aimed at revitalizing the declining Kumawood film industry.
The committee, chaired by Bishop Ofori-Adu, has been tasked with developing a strategic framework to ensure sustainable growth and create long-term employment opportunities for industry players.
The committee’s mandate includes assessing the current state of the industry and identifying key challenges, formulating policies to attract investment, and strengthening film infrastructure by improving production facilities and training opportunities. Additionally, the committee will explore strategies to promote Ghanaian films both locally and internationally while enhancing film festivals and cultural showcases to celebrate Ghanaian storytelling and creativity.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, March 4, Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the importance of unity in achieving the committee’s objectives.
“We, as leaders of the country, all we need from you is to unite and work together because that unity will encourage the president to push more effort to revive the industry. So unity is very key to us as far as the issue is concerned,” he stated.
The minister further took to social media to highlight the significance of the initiative, expressing optimism about the committee’s potential impact.
“Today, I officially commissioned a Ministerial Committee on the Movie Industry & Creatives (Kumawood) to drive the growth and transformation of Ghana’s film and creative arts sector. Together, we will build a globally competitive film industry that tells the rich stories of Asanteman and Ghana!” he shared.
The committee includes representatives from various sectors of the film industry, including veteran actors Oheneyere Mercy Asiedu and Bill Asamoah. The minister urged the members to carry out their mandate with dedication and commitment, stressing that their work could play a crucial role in restoring Kumawood to its former glory.
