British-Ghanaian rapper and philanthropist Stormzy is set to receive an honorary doctorate in law from the University of Cambridge in recognition of his contributions to education, music, sports, and literature.

Stormzy, born Michael Ebenezer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr., has played a significant role in supporting Black students in higher education. In 2018, he launched the Stormzy Scholarship, which provides full financial support to two Black British students at Cambridge each year, covering their tuition and living expenses. The initiative later expanded with additional backing from HSBC UK, increasing the number of beneficiaries to ten students per year.

To date, 55 students have received assistance through the scholarship, with the largest cohort set to graduate this year. Cambridge University acknowledged that the “Stormzy effect” has led to a notable increase in applications from Black students across the UK, demonstrating the impact of his philanthropic efforts.

The rapper is among eight distinguished individuals nominated for honorary degrees by the institution. Dame Katherine Grainger, one of Britain’s most decorated Olympians and the first female chair of the British Olympic Association, will also receive a doctorate in law. Other honorees include Nobel Prize-winning economist Sir Oliver Hart, political activist and author Professor Angela Davis, and renowned actor Sir Simon Russell Beale.

All nominees have accepted the honorary degrees, pending final approval by the university’s governing body. The ceremony, presided over by Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice, is scheduled for June 25.

Stormzy’s recognition highlights his lasting influence beyond the music industry, reinforcing his commitment to social change and educational empowerment. His efforts continue to inspire and provide opportunities for young Black students aspiring to enter prestigious institutions like Cambridge.
