Bawumia’s economic achievements as vice better than Mahama – Miracles Aboagye

The spokesperson for the 2024 Bawumia campaign team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has claimed that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s economic achievements as Vice President are better than those of former President John Mahama.

He credited this to the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s strong measures to tackle economic issues and stabilize the cedi.

In an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Monday, Aboagye recognized the cedi’s decline against the dollar but insisted that the NPP has still performed better than the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.

He pointed to improvements in the economy and efforts to strengthen its foundations.

Aboagye recalled Dr. Bawumia’s famous comment during Mahama’s presidency: “You can engage in all the propaganda you want, but if the fundamentals are weak, the exchange rate will expose you,” noting that the exchange rate was about GH¢4 to a dollar at that time.

When asked about Dr. Bawumia’s prospects in the upcoming December elections amid the current economic climate, Aboagye confidently stated, “Why not? Dr. Bawumia’s record is impressive compared to others on the ballot.”

He added, “Between Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and John Mahama, we have proof of a government that has intentionally established systems to strengthen weak economic fundamentals for lasting solutions.”

Aboagye also explained that Dr. Bawumia’s comments on the exchange rate were not aimed at Mahama but rather at the economy’s structure.

“He has always maintained that his earlier statement is still valid. It was not meant to criticize anyone but to highlight the state of our economy. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has consistently pointed out that we are operating a Guggisberg economy, which is reliant on imports and lacks strong fundamentals.”
